CNN Breaking News

We had six months.


That was all the time between the Silicon Valley event we had just finished and our June show at the Javits Center in New York City.


Six months to turn momentum into something real.

Louis finished the artwork for the massive LED billboard mounted on the front of Javits — the one facing Eleventh Avenue, visible from ten blocks away.


Big type.


Bold dates.


CloudEXPO

June 6–9

New York City


We needed photos of it running.


Sales material.


Proof.


So I got in my car, crossed the George Washington Bridge, and drove straight into Manhattan.


I parked near Javits and walked inside.


No badge.


No entourage.


Just me — and a CD in my hand.

The billboard office was tucked behind the exhibit halls.

Inside sat a man with a thick accent and a half-open pizza box on his desk.


I handed him the artwork.


“Listen,” I said. “We have a show here in June. I brought the final graphic. Can you run it on the billboard for ten minutes? I’ll go outside, take a few photos, and I’ll be out of your way.”


He studied me.


Then he said,


“I already got my pizza. Aren’t you the pizza delivery man?”


I blinked.


“No,” I said. “I’m with SYS-CON.”


He leaned back in his chair.


“I don’t know who you are,” he said. “I have to call SYS-CON.”


He picked up the phone.


“There is a pizza delivery man in my office,” he said. “He says he knows you.”


He turned toward me.


“What is your name?”


I told him.

He put the call on speaker.


Corinna answered.


“This man says he works for you,” he said.


There was a pause.


Then Corinna said, without hesitation,


“That’s the big boss.


That’s the owner of the company.”


The man looked at me again.


Longer this time.


Then he nodded.


“Okay,” he said. “We will run your billboard.”

Ten minutes later, our show was glowing thirty feet tall on the face of Javits.


I stood across the street taking photos like a tourist.

Then I got back in my car and drove north.


Mission accomplished.

That was just the beginning.


I bought every billboard space I could find — including one in Times Square.


We ran banners inside subway trains.


Huge LED ads at the entrances of the Lincoln and Holland Tunnels.


Radio spots every twenty-two minutes on CBS’s 1010 WINS.


Thirty-second commercials on CNBC, from Long Island to New Jersey.


For six straight months, we were everywhere.

You would’ve thought we were launching new Calvin Klein underwear.

CloudEXPO New York opened.


Oracle had been our longtime sponsor going back to the Java Developer’s Journal days. But within months, the secret was out.


Silicon Valley had heard the word “cloud.”


And we were the only game in town.


Every company with a half-built cloud strategy wanted a booth.


Microsoft rolled in massive hardware for its 40×40 booth, glowing with neon-green light behind glass walls.


IBM.

Oracle.

Google.


Startups with deep VC pockets and bigger ambitions.

If you wanted to be someone in Silicon Valley, you were at CloudEXPO.

The scale was unreal.


Every Fortune 50 company was on our expo floor.

We ran out of space — so we began leasing conference rooms inside our own conference.


Companies were holding their own events inside space we were already renting from the convention center.


That’s when I knew we were no longer running an event.

We were running a city.

Oracle arrived with thirty VIP cars, each wrapped in red Oracle Cloud branding, shuttling executives directly to their booth.


The show floor never slept.


On opening day, we noticed a CNN crew walking the expo floor.


They filmed.


They interviewed attendees.


That night, an eleven-minute segment aired on CNN’s evening news — worldwide.


They ran it again.


And again.


For an entire week.


You couldn’t buy that kind of exposure for millions of dollars.

Our keynotes came from places no technology conference had ever reached.


Ira “Gus” Hunt, the CTO of the CIA.


Jill Singer, the CIO of the National Reconnaissance Office.


Cloud computing wasn’t a theory anymore.

It was national infrastructure.


And for one week in New York City, it all lived under our roof.

I remember seeing a tweet.


Someone was asking what was happening in Manhattan.

He couldn’t find a hotel room anywhere in the city.


Another person replied,


“This week is CloudEXPO in New York.”


We had sold out the hotels.


All of them.

In the middle of the show, Jeremy delivered devastating news.


He had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.


He returned to Denmark to begin treatment.


On Twitter, he shared his diagnosis publicly.


Later, Jeremy told us what happened next.


Ten hours after that tweet, his doorbell rang.


He was at his summer house.


Two men in black suits stood outside.


They handed him an envelope.


Inside was a get-well card.


Embossed with the raised seal of the National Reconnaissance Office.


It had been sent from Washington, D.C.


From Jill Singer — the CIO of the NRO.

That’s when it hit me.


This wasn’t just a conference anymore.


This was something far bigger than us.


We had arrived early — at least two years ahead of the market.


And for the next twenty years, no serious competitor ever dared to announce a rival event.


They knew our history.


And they knew there was no surviving a fight with momentum like that.
